Getting enough sleep is vital for our physical and emotional wellbeing and an important factor in living a younger life. Most people will immediately notice how bad they feel when they start to sleep badly, and in many ways our quality of sleep is a good barometer of how healthy our lifestyle is.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP
Research shows that too little sleep is associated with poor health, obesity and diabetes, and is also often linked to unhealthy lifestyle choices. For instance, sleep deprived people are significantly more likely to reach for unhealthy high fat and sugar foods than those who sleep well. Lack of sleep is also proven to be linked with poor mood, higher stress levels and makes exercising less likely.
HOW MANY HOURS OF SLEEP SHOULD YOU GET?
You should be aiming for around 7 to 9 hours uninterrupted* sleep per night to be in the healthy range. Although some people like to have more and some can survive on less.
*It's not just the amount of sleep that you get that matters, but also the quality. A broken sleep can affect your health and wellbeing just as much as a lack of hours sleep can.
